CCIN Members’ Update January 2019

  • 1st Jan 2019

Cllr Sharon Taylor OBE- Chair of the CCIN & Leader of Stevenage Borough CouncilWelcome to this Special Edition of Update

As we head into the Festive Season, we’ve asked colleagues from our Executive Oversight Committee to share their thoughts on the opportunities for the Network and their hopes for 2019.  I was delighted to read about so much positivity at a time when local government is facing so much uncertainty. Thanks also to Steve Reed OBE, our Honorary President and Lord Roy Kennedy of Southwark for offering their thoughts at this busy time.

Most of us are lucky to have families and loved ones with whom we can share this Festive season, and we take for granted plentiful food, warmth and shelter.  But it is also a time to remember those that are struggling.  Over 14 million people, about one in five of the UK population are in poverty, according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Of those in poverty 8.2 million are working-age adults, 4.1 million are children and 1.9 million are pensioners. Eight million people live in poverty in families where at least one person is working.  Christmas is a time for reflection and the New Year brings an opportunity to make resolutions.  With our Strategy Day on 9th January in Bristol, I hope to see many of you there, where together we can make sure that our Network is making a real difference to the communities we serve.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Best wishes

Sharon
