This timely event will explore how we can advance a more democratic economy: where workers and citizens have a much greater say and role in how the economy is run and in whose interests it serves. With a growing cost and climate crisis, and an absence of a national UK industrial and economic plan, we are at a critical moment for the country and all us as trades unions, activists and political leaders should now consider where we are at, and what more we can do.
At the local level, many political leaders – including those in devolved administrations including city regions are advancing progressive ideas -within the confines of existing devolved arrangements.
Community Wealth Building(CWB) projects have taken hold across the country with standout councils such as Preston and North Ayrshire. Trades Unions and workers are fighting back, through industrial action against pay cuts and cost crisis, and progressive activists continue to agitate for a genuine response to climate crises and issues including outsourcing of public services, nationalisation of utilities, racial justice and tackling poverty. What unites us all, is a recognition that the economy is going wrong and we need more say. This conference theme of democratization the economy and the role of CWB are central themes to that.
The event will feature discussion and debate, including contributions from those who are at the forefront of meaningful change in building a democratic economy. This includes Trades unions, political leaders, thinkers and practitioners in the field.
It will be invite only and we should expect the event be both celebratory in what is already happening, but also energizing in highlighting the opportunities and pathways forward.
