Dear Member

Welcome to the August edition of Update

The Summer of Sport continues with Olympic Fever gripping the nation.  We also have much to celebrate this month with the winners of the Co-op of the Year Awards, the Co-op UnFound Accelerator Awards and the shortlisted councils in the MJ Awards revealed in this edition.

Check out our latest report, Beyond Asset Transfer which gives valuable insight into how to rebuild communities post COVID-19.  We also have some helpful advice from Mutual Ventures on applying for the government’s £150m Community Ownership Fund, designed to support local people to save local community assets and amenities at risk.

Co-operatives UK has launched the Co-op Economy report 2021, illustrating how co-ops were four times less likely to cease trading in 2020 than businesses generally.   The co-operative economy has continued to grow throughout the pandemic and is now worth £39.7bn.

Over the last few months, the Council Leaders and Co-operative Portfolio Leads Group have been working with Stir to Action to see how we can support councils in developing the coop economy.  We’re delighted to sponsor 25 places on a Taster Workshop which will run on 14 October.  Details on how to register can be found below.

We now have 103 Members and Supporters.  We’re delighted to welcome Witney Town Council who joined as an Associate Member last week. The latest Membership figures are:

Finally, we’ve booked our places at the Labour and Liberal Democrat Party conferences next month and are re-publishing our renowned Case Study Pack for distribution at these events.  All Members are allocated space, but we need to know by 5pm on Tuesday, 3 August if you will submit a Case Study.  Please support this publication.

I hope that you enjoy this edition of Update.

Take care

Sharon
