Members’ Update – February 2025

  • 5th Feb 2025

Happy UN International Year of Cooperatives! The United Nations has again designated 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives, the first being 2012, the same year the CCIN was launched. International Years are a global recognition of cooperatives' immense contributions towards a more just and equitable world. The slogan of the Year, ‘Cooperatives build a better World,’ rightly reflects this and captures the heart of our movement’s enduring mission.

We kickstart our celebrations by launching our brand guidelines featuring a new logo!  It is now without the hyphen in ‘cooperative’.

Plans to celebrate IYC2015 continue with our Annual Conference and AGM on 12 and 13 February.  Hosted by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and sponsored by Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), the conference takes place at the landmark cultural hub Woolwich Works. The theme is ‘How cooperative councils can support the Government’s Missions‘.  We have an exciting programme of guest speakers, plenary sessions, workshops, and an exhibition showcasing some of our Affiliate Members. Places are free for our members.

January has been busy with all our Governance groups—the Executive Oversight Committee, Values and Principles Board, and Finance & General Purposes Group—meeting before the Annual Conference.  The agreed minutes of our EOC and V&P Board are posted on our website here.

In this edition, we welcome several new members from across the country:

We feature a blog by Andrew Laird, CEO of Mutual Ventures, in response to the publication of the Government’s ‘AI Opportunities Action Plan,’.

Finally, we want to send our thoughts and prayers to Councillor Sandra Barr, from Stevenage Borough Council.  Sandra was admitted to hospital in January, having suffered a brain aneurysm.  She is now slowly recovering from surgery.  We’re missing her sparkle from EOC.  Get well soon, Sandra.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our Annual Conference in Woolwich next week.

Best wishes

Jim
